4WD debate over access to Ashley River
After posting the news yesterday about a compromise reached on 4WD use of the Ashley Rakahuri during bird breeding season, a lively debate both for and against the compromise is now playing out on the Ashley Rakahuri Rivercare Group’s Facebook page. As the chair of the group has pointed out, changes are now underway to protect our waterways. Old habits that have led to the decline in environmental quality will be hard to break, but this is a necessary start. Fortunately, responsible 4W drivers support sharing the river with breeding birds.
The same cannot be said for the person or persons responsible for shooting 4 black-billed gulls on Greenpark Sands flats at Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere last week.
